About the GSO 16" Professional Dobsonian

The Dobsonian is the cheapest way to put a large mirror under the sky. There is no tracking motor and no computer: you nudge it, and the simplicity is what lets the budget go into the mirror instead. This 16" model gathers enough light for faint galaxy groups, spiral structure in the brighter Messiers, and globular clusters resolved to their cores — under a genuinely dark sky, which this aperture demands to be worth its bulk. The Professional adds a dual-speed 10:1 micro focuser, an altitude clutch, an azimuth roller bearing and a tube balancing system over the Nightwatch — worth having if you observe at high magnification, where a single-speed focuser makes fine focus a fight.

What can I see with the GSO 16" Professional Dobsonian?
With 406mm of aperture you will see lunar craters and mountain ranges in sharp relief, Saturn's rings clearly separated from the planet, Jupiter's cloud belts and its four Galilean moons, and the phases of Venus. At this aperture the Orion Nebula shows real nebulosity, the Andromeda Galaxy appears as an extended glow, and brighter globular clusters begin resolving into individual stars from a reasonably dark site.
What magnification does the GSO 16" Professional Dobsonian support?
The optical ceiling for a 406mm aperture is about 812x. With the 1800mm focal length, a 25mm eyepiece gives 72x and a 10mm eyepiece gives 180x. In practice, atmospheric conditions over most Indian cities limit useful magnification to roughly 150x–200x, and the majority of your observing will happen between 72x and 180x where the image is brightest and sharpest.
Is the GSO 16" Professional Dobsonian suitable for beginners?
It is usable by a determined beginner, but it is rated Advanced because getting the most from this aperture assumes some familiarity with finding objects and managing the optics. If this is your first telescope, consider whether a simpler instrument would get used more often.
Does the GSO 16" Professional Dobsonian need collimation?
Yes, occasionally. Reflector optics use mirrors that need realigning from time to time, particularly after rough transport. It is a ten-minute job with an inexpensive collimation cap. You should also allow the telescope 20–30 minutes outside to reach ambient temperature before serious observing.
Can I do astrophotography with the GSO 16" Professional Dobsonian?
Only in a limited way. Smartphone photographs of the Moon through the eyepiece work well, and short lunar exposures are achievable. Deep-sky astrophotography requires a precision equatorial mount with autoguiding, which this telescope does not have.
